Recent studies surrounding Epimedium and its active ingredient “icarriin” have resulted in scientists saying it could be the next Viagra.  (Source:  J. Nat. Prod., 2008, 71 (9), pp 1513–15)

This is because, like Viagra, Epimedium acts as a potent PDE-5 inhibitor, increasing nitric oxide levels and relaxing the smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum and its associated arterioles.  This has the effect of increasing blood flow to the penis, which then results in an erection.

Known throughout Asia as “Horny Goat Weed,” Epimedium has been used for thousands of years as a libido enhancer.  Legend has it that it was first discovered when a Chinese goat herder noticed the increased libido and copulating activities of his herd after eating the flowering plant.

Now, science is proving there really is something to the stories surrounding this legendary aphrodisiac.

Most people associate Ginkgo Biloba with mental clarity, improved memory, and focus.  However, more than 300 studies have been done on Gingko Biloba, with many indicating that it can have a significant and positive impact on sexual function, too.  

For example, an open trial of Gingko Biloba run by the University of California at San Francisco found it to be 84% effective in treating anti-depressant related sexual dysfunction.  It stated that Gingko Biloba generally improved all 4 phases of sexual response including (1) desire, (2) excitement, (3) orgasm, and (4) afterglow.  (Source: Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy; 1998, Vol 24: 139-143)

It has also been well documented in various medical journals that Gingko Biloba improves microvascular circulation (i.e. blood flow to small blood vessels and capillaries), potentially improving erectile function.

And it may help to relax muscles of the Corpus Cavernosum via its effects on the nitric oxide pathways.  Again, resulting in increased blood flow to the penile tissues for stronger, harder erections.

A study by the Department of Urology at the University of Ulsan College of Medicine (published in 2002) investigated the effectiveness of Korean Red Ginseng for treating men with erectile dysfunction.

Many studies have been done on lab animals (rats, rabbits, etc.) showing the potential effectiveness of Asian Red Ginseng for improving sexual function.

But this study was done on men, not animals, making it particularly relevant.

Results showed that the erectile function scores of men who were treated with the ginseng were significantly higher than those who received the placebo – most notably, scores of questions of erection penetration and maintenance, as well as penile rigidity, were much higher than the placebo group.

Overall, 60% of patients who participated noted an improvement in their erections using Korean Red Ginseng.

Panax Ginseng has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac, noted for improving sexual function, endurance, and stamina.

Other studies have noted that it may improve nitric oxide synthesis in the corpus cavernosum – again, increasing blood flow to the penile tissues and resulting in firmer erections.

Saw Palmetto Berries have long held a reputation as sexual stimulants and aphrodisiacs.

A study published in JAMA demonstrated that Saw Palmetto is effective for treating men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia.   It has also been shown to be beneficial for treating conditions associated with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).

Saw Palmetto extract works to prevent testosterone from converting into DHT (dihydrotestosterone), the hormone thought to cause prostrate cells to multiply which leads to an enlarged prostate.

Saw Palmetto works by relaxing smooth muscle tissues, resulting in increased blood flow to the penis.  As well, it inhibits androgen and estrogen receptor activity and may be beneficial for both sexes in balancing the hormones.

Because of its hormonal effects, Saw Palmetto aids in regulating the thyroid and the related activity of sexual organs.  It's currently widely used throughout the US, Canada, the UK, and Germany for healthy function of the prostate and urinary tract.

Saw Palmetto is one of the few herbal remedies that are considered to be anabolic -- strengthening and building body tissues.

Muira Puama has long held a reputation as an aphrodisiac and tonic for treating male impotence and loss of sex drive, both in South America and Europe.  It’s listed in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia as a treatment for dysentery and impotence.

However, recent clinical studies with humans have produced scientific evidence that support its reputation for improving male sexual function.

In a study by Dr. Jacques Waynberg at the Institute of Sexology in Paris, a total of 262 men suffering with lack of sexual desire and/or erectile difficulties were treated daily with Muira Puama extract. 

After two weeks, 51% of those suffering with erectile difficulties reported a significant improvement, while 62% of those who reported a lack of sexual desire reported a “dynamic” effect on their libido.

Another study performed by Dr. Waynberg with 100 men with similar complaints of poor sexual function and lack of desire produced comparable results.

Of the participants treated with Muira Puama, 66% reported an increased frequency of sexual intercourse! And 70% reported an overall increase in their sexual desire.

The catuaba tree grows in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, and for hundreds of years, its bark has been used by tribal men as a libido enhancer.

Initially, it's reported to increase the frequency of erotic dreams you experience, followed by a boost in sexual desire.

It's thought to work by dilating blood vessels to increase blood flow in the genital regions, while functioning as a nerve stimulate.  As well, it has a strong reputation as an energy booster, relieving fatigue and boosting general sexual interest and function.

This phytochemical from the hawthorn tree is rich in bioflavonoids that relax and dilate arteries. It also acts as a powerful antioxidant that helps to increase blood flow and oxygen to the heart.  This helps to reduce the effort the heart must exert to circulate blood throughout the body, thereby reducing blood pressure and strain on the heart muscle.

The bioflavonoid substances in hawthorn berry strengthen blood vessels and improve blood flow to other areas of the body, too.
